CARDIOLOGY

Om Hospital Cardiac Centre also has facilities like Intravascular Ultrasounds, FFR, OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography), Rotablaters, Electrophysiology, Intra-aortic balloon pump etc. Recently Cardiac Center has been doing a lot of work in ASD/ VSD/ PDA closures non-invasively, where holes in the heart are repaired without open-heart surgery.
The cardiac centre also does angioplasty in acute Heart Attack Situation. This is called PAMI(Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction). More than 2000 such patients have been treated successfully in Om Hospital. Over 20 people work in the cardiac centre, which is supported by one of the largest coronary care unit.

ANGIOGRAPHY

What is angiography and how is it done?

Angiography is an imaging test that uses X-rays to view your body’s blood vessels. The X-rays provided by an angiography are called angiograms. This test is used to study narrow, blocked, enlarged, or malformed arteries or veins in many parts of your body, including your brain, heart, abdomen, and legs. A coronary angiogram is an X-ray of the arteries in the heart. This shows the extent and severity of any heart disease, and can help you to figure out how well your heart is working. With this information, you and your doctor can talk through your treatment options. These may include angioplasty (stents), bypass graft surgery or medications.

CARDIOMYOPATHY

What is cardiomyopathy?

Main types of cardiomyopathy include dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Treatment — which might include medications, surgically implanted devices or, in severe cases, a heart transplant — depends on which type of cardiomyopathy you have and how serious it is.

Symptoms:

ANGIOPLASTY

The term angioplasty means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery. However, most modern angioplasty procedures also involve inserting a short wire-mesh tube, called a stent, into the artery during the procedure. The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more freely. Coronary angioplasty is sometimes known as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). The combination of coronary angioplasty with stenting is usually referred to as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The blood flow through the coronary arteries improves after an angioplasty. Many people find that any symptoms they had get significantly better and they’re able to do more than they could before the procedure. If you’ve had a heart attack, an angioplasty can increase your chances of surviving more than clot-busting medication (thrombolysis) can and the procedure can also reduce your chances of having another heart attack in the future.

VALVE SURGERY

Heart Valve Surgery

Heart valve surgery is a procedure to treat heart valve disease. Heart valve disease involves at least one of the four heart valves not working properly. Heart valves keep blood flowing in the correct direction through your heart. The four valves are the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve and aortic valve. Each valve has flaps — called leaflets for the mitral and tricuspid valves and cusps for the aortic and pulmonary valves. These flaps open and close once during each heartbeat. Valves that don’t open or close properly disrupt blood flow through your heart to your body. In heart valve surgery, your surgeon repairs or replaces the affected heart valves. Many surgical approaches can be used to repair or replace heart valves, including open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart surgery.Your treatment depends on several factors, including your age, your health, the condition of the affected heart valve and the severity of your condition.

HEART TRANSPLANT

What is a Heart Transplant?

A heart transplant is surgery to remove the diseased heart from a person and replace it with a healthy one from an organ donor. To remove the heart from the donor, two or more healthcare providers must declare the donor brain-dead. Before you can be put on a waiting list for a heart transplant, a healthcare provider makes the decision that this is the best treatment choice for your heart failure. A healthcare team also makes sure you are otherwise healthy enough to go through the transplant process.

Why might I need a heart transplant?

End-stage heart failure is a disease in which the heart muscle is failing severely in its attempt to pump blood through the body. It means other treatments are no longer working. End-stage heart failure is the final stage of heart failure. Despite its name, a diagnosis of heart failure does not mean the heart is about to stop beating. The term failure means the heart muscle is failing to pump blood normally because it is damaged or very weak, or both.
